That antique license plate had been loosely hung by this old cafe's front door for so many years I'd stopped really noticing it. It was there when I first started working here as a waitress in 1951. But this morning, as I shuffled my packages, my lunch and my purse to my other arm so I could open the door, a bright-eyed chickadee landed on the edge of that old plate and looked at me as if to say, “Why are you bringing your lunch to a cafe?” Well, it might seem strange but then he has never eaten here.
However, I decided if he was that interested in me, the neighborly thing to do would be to offer him a bit of my lunch. So, I pinched off a crust from my sandwich and held it up.
He flew to my hand, took the piece of crust and flew away.
I thought that was a special thing and I always try to give in return when the universe gives something special to me. So, I pulled a silver sticky star like I always carry for the children of families I wait on, out of my pocket and stuck it on that license plate right where that chickadee had landed.
Then, with a smile on my face, I opened that old cafe's front door and went in to start my work day.
Aw, such a delightful diversion, thank you! Just the ticket to step outside one's environment for a quick bit of whimsy.😊 I adore chickadees; my daughter's first word was "dee-dee" while watching them on the bird feeder.💕
What a sweet watercolor!
